This June, we began planting a new 60-hectare olive grove on our estates in the Garrigues region (Lleida).
This new grove is part of PONS’s agricultural strategy to expand our production capacity by incorporating varieties that are well-adapted to the region, optimized farming systems, and the goal of producing oils with unique gastronomic and nutritional characteristics.
A total of 81,000 trees will be planted (at a density of 1,350 trees/ha), using a super-intensive system with a planting layout of 4 x 1.35 metres.
This planting system forms a continuous hedge, where trees grow in a compact and uniform way. This model facilitates crop management, optimizes the use of sunlight and water, and allows the grove to begin production earlier—typically between the second and third year after planting.
Varieties Chosen for Their Agricultural, Culinary, and Health Value
We have selected three varieties based on their strong performance in the field, outstanding flavor potential, and high natural content of polyphenols—compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to cardiovascular, metabolic, and cognitive health.
· Arbosana: A moderately vigorous variety, highly stable, with early and consistent production. Produces well-structured fruity oils. Well-suited for mechanical harvesting.
· Lecciana: A cross between Leccino and Arbosana. Resistant to Xylella fastidiosa, cold-hardy, and capable of producing oils with a very high polyphenol concentration. The oil is intense, fresh, and complex.
· Coriana: A hybrid of Koroneiki and Arbosana. Combines resilience, consistent yield, and high oil content. Produces robust oils with density and a pronounced aromatic profile.
With this project in Castelldans, we take another step forward in growing sustainably and with purpose. We are committed to varieties that are aligned with our land and the evolving needs of the sector—always looking to the future, with our roots firmly grounded.
